I spent a few hours on the phone with a tech from Microsoft. they ran a ton of different tools, tried the suggestions here on the forum, and in the end I did an in-place upgrade (repair install). retyped the key, and it was good to go! still puzzles me as to what caused this issue in the first place, and I wonder if I'll see it again on any of my systems or customers.. thank you all for the replies!
